ARTISTBIOGRAPHY
Valeria is an emerging multimedia artist based in Ontario, specializing in drawing, painting, and sculpture. Her work explores the human figure, human emotions, and Peruvian culture. Born in Lima, Peru, she emigrated to Canada in search of better opportunities to develop her artistic career. In Canada, she studied Advanced Visual and Creative Arts at Sheridan College (2023), where she expanded her technical skills and connected with people in the industry and other aspiring artists. Her desire to stay connected with her culture led her to participate in the Latin American Art Competition in 2025, organized by the Sheridan College Student Union. In this competition, she won third place in the 2D Visual Arts category. At the same institution, she worked as a studio monitor for the Introduction to Figurative Sculpture course during her third year of college. Through her work, she connects emotionally with the public without the need for words.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Whether through drawings, paintings, or sculptures, my work offers a unique perspective on childhood, emotions, identity, and Peruvian culture. The use of toys and vibrant colors allows me to stimulate the viewer’s imagination while also evoking nostalgia for their own childhood and expressing different emotions. I also incorporate art materials typically seen as exclusive to children, such as googly eyes or Play-Doh, demonstrating that childhood activities should not be dismissed simply because they are “for children.” Similarly, I help viewers connect with my work by using the human figure, a highly recognizable form to the brain, and mirrors, where they can become the protagonists of my pieces. I also depict my experiences as a Peruvian through colors that are representative of my country or carry historical significance. Through these colors, I aim to represent my culture or highlight social, economic, or political issues affecting my country.
